I haven't been writing any literature lately which is somewhat of
a depressing reality, but it is surely for good reason. This reason
is that I've been spending a good deal of time planning out the
serial. You'll remember from this old post that I canceled the old
one in order to reshape the project into something better. The
process has gone on for several months and I have finally settled
into a scenario and cast of characters that I am comfortable with.
Whether or not I will actually be successful in any way are still questionable. I can only hope.
So what is going on with the story? Most importantly is that I
enhanced several characters. Thanks to a more structured approach, I
have created a more complex and dependable basis for a story. The
work wasn't quite easy, as crafting relationships and fitting it with
a coherent plot is definitely one of author's challenges. It takes
trial and error, creativity, and patience. regardless, it is much better than just doing it on the fly.
I went through and tested several different scenarios, writing up
some minor plans and seeing how it would all turn out. My first plan
involved having Meeki trapped in a space ship heading for the planet
of Newhope. Apparently, she was a spy already (we skip her training) and was on task when the cult wanted to go along on an interplanetary
pilgrimage. This scenario featured the villain falsely accusing Meeki
of murdering the cult leader, and then one “theme” of the work
lied in Meeki's difficulty in facing the reality that she was widely
believed to be a cruel, evil person. It was here that I also included my Braya character. Her increased presence is due to a request from the friend I will
dedicate this work to.
So I struggled with the “stuck on a ship, fighting against
disaster in the face of eventual terrorism” motif. I changed events
and characters around constantly until I realized it simply wasn't
going to be the sort of thing that could express an optimal story.
Frustrated, I cleared out the imaginary electronic table and started
over. That is, I started over while carrying over a cast of required
characters and concepts. I ultimately settled with a scenario
that no longer starred Meeki as a spy. The role of a spy is really a
very limiting one when it comes to what sort of stories you want
to write, and especially what sort of relationships the character can
have. Of course, she may become a spy in a different sense later on.
We'll have to see how things develop.
As for my progress in all of this, I'm almost done with planning. Maybe some writing will finally get done sooner rather than later. So stay tuned, "Meeki and Braya" will come soon to a computer monitor near you.
