I have not been posting much lately because I've been slightly shorter on time than usual. And the time that I do have was occupired by annoyance. I was wanting to keep my computer on 24/7 to perform a service for a group of people. So I figured I should get one of Antec's new super cool cases which they boast "silence" about. It is the Sonata II. Well, sad to say, the case is anything but silent. It is an improvement over the typical bullshit computer case brand, of course, but I have had a less than satisfactory experience with the case I got. The first problem was the hard drive racks. In many cases the hard drive gets screwed directly onto the little rack thing that holds it. Supposedly this is problematic because of vibration issues, but I never noticed vibration issues before. My 80 GB Western Digital was outrageously loud in the hard drive rack. I tried just about as many different possibly setups as I could, switching between racks, trying various screw tightenings, and so on. I simply couldn't get the hard drive to shut the hell up when it was installed as instructed. My last resort was to place a lot of those soft things that they ship electronics with on the bottom of the computer and rest my hard drive on it. It was a major improvement in sound. Some of you are probably gasping in terror that I am just laying my hard drive at the bottom of the case instead of securing it, but I really had no choice in the matter. The second problem was the vibration of the case in general. Most of it is not a problem, but finding just the right tightness for the screws to avoid the side panel vibration is a real pain in the ass at times. There is no question about Antec's reputation as a good maker of the goods they have. I'm willing to believe that maybe I just got a bad case, as I've gotten good from them before. But now my confidence in them is shaken.
